Czechoslovalian Sugar Horns
Dough:
- 1/2 pint dairy sour cream (1 cup)
- 1 pkg. active dry yeast
- 5 cup all purpose flour
- 1 lb. margarine, softened (4 sticks)
- 1 egg
- lemon juice or grated lemon peel
Nut Filling:
- 3 cups ground walnuts
- 2 cups sugar
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract (or lemon extract)
- Milk
Warm sour cream, sprinkle yeast over it and stir until yeast dissolves.
Add flour, margarine, egg, yolks and small amount of lemon juice or peel.
Mix well. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
For filling, mix nuts, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and enough milk to make thick paste.
Roll out a fourth of the pastry at a time to 1/8th inch thickness on lightly floured surface.
Cut into 3 inch squares.
Take each square and roll out on a surface sprinkled with granulated sugar into a larger square.
Put 1 teaspoon filling onto a corner of each square, roll jelly-roll fashion and shape into crescents.
Put on a greased cookie sheet.
Bake about 20 minutes at 350 degrees.
May be sprinkled with powdered sugar, if desired.
Makes about 6 12 dozen.
